Prehistoric Brentwood

This card satisfies SIX DTGD (Dare to Get Dirty) 2009 challenges! I don't usually do the Dirty Dozen challenges, but for some reason I did this year. I was also off work the week they started. That had to have something to do with it.

#1 - CHALLENGE: Sketch Challenge

#2 - CHALLENGE: Make a masculine card following these: ONE piece of pattern paper, TWO stamps, and THREE colors (white or cream neutral does not count toward the colors)

#3 - CHALLENGE: Create a scene

#4 - CHALLENGE: Paper Tole

#5 - CHALLENGE: Create a project with an animal theme. Think animal images, animal prints and backgrounds, faux fur, jungle, farm, pet-themed projects, etc.

#6 - CHALLENGE: Make a card inspired by music.

I've had this card created by stampwithdiane in my favorites for a while. I usually remove the favorites after I case them & link them to my creation. This one is still in my favorites. I think I need to do something else inspired by stampwithdiane's card.

Music inspiration: Wild thing...you make my heart sing! And I have visions of Charlie Sheen singing this. I have no idea why! I don't even like Charlie Sheen! Now Johnny Depp...that's a fine, fine piece of work. (wiping off drool)

My picture looks better. I made me a makeshift light box by taping together PTI White cardstock.

SUPPLIES:
Stamps: JLO Brentwood, SU! Prehistoric
Paper: Baja Breeze, Kiwi Kiss, Chocolate Chip, PTI White, Basic Grey
Ink: Baja Breeze, Palette Hybrid Noir
Accessories: Paper Snips, Copics, Pop Dots, SU! Tab Punch, Sticky Strip, Snail
Techniques: Paper Tole, Punch

Just Popping In

...to say HELLO! Actually, Brentwood says...Merry Christmas!

This image, colored with Copic markers, will be available at the release party on July 24. Sketch is from SCS SC237. Card base is PTI White. DP is from a Hot off the Press Christmas Time assortment I found a Michael's five plus years ago.

I've started trying to create a coordinating inside for my cards. A coordinating inside really does give the card a finished look and feel.

Here's the coordinating sentiment for the image on the card front.

Supplies
Stamps: JLO Brentwood
Paper: PTI White, SU! Real Red, HOTP Christmas Time
Accessories: Corner Rounder, Copic Markers, Sticky Strip, Snail

JLO Inpsiration Challenge #2

On Mother's Day, we went to see E.T. at the Historic State Theater in Elizabethtown, KY. The State recently completed several years of restoration and renovation. It is now open. You can learn more about the Historic State Theater HERE.

The Art Deco style was prevalent between 1920 and 1939. It is sandwiched between the two World Wars. The Art Deco style is characterized by:
  • angular, symmetrical and geometric designs. In the State, the stage is flanked by two greek goddesses; one holding the mask of tragedy, the other comedy. The theater is a mirror image of itself, if you just put that mirror right down the center of the auditorium.
  • stepped forms, sweeping curves, chevron patterns and sunburst motif. The State has sweeping curves in it's decor. You can see this in the murals on the side walls and in the relief sculptures on the ceiling. In the picture below, you can see the stepped form in the design of the walls on the outside of the theater.

  • bold colors. The State is painted in various shades of green and burgundy. Other colors characteristic of the Art Deco Style are yellow and torquoise.
  • non-traditional materials. Art Deco Style includes the use of materials such as aluminum, marble, glass, stainless steel, plastic and/or inlaid wood.

Here is a description of the State Theater, from http://historicstatetheater.org/history/

Fronting on Dixie Highway, the theater is one of the few remaining examples of Art Deco architecture in Hardin County. The building is constructed of brick in a common bond pattern. Significant features are the large marquee, neon signs and stepped roof parapet which are typical features of the Art Deco theater architecture of the late 1930’s and 1940’s.

The front facade includes in-laid geometric designs, which surround and emphasize the grand vertical marquee tower. Carrara glass accented portions of the front façade such as the ticket booth on the right of the building and the store-front style window on the left.

###

JLO Bonus Challenge #01

May is one of those odd months where we have FIVE Fridays! Today is bonus challenge day!

A fellow SCSer had the "feel bads" and couldn't decide whether to wear a new sweater or something old and comfy to work that morning. She decided on the new sweater.

Check out this sweater from Land's End. Click the patterns until you get to the "Bright Pistachio Multi Buttrfl" - the last swatch.

This sweater made her smile and I'm sure it lifted her spirits. When you look good, you feel good.

So, what about this sweater inspires you? I LOVE THE COLORS!

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to create something inspired by this particular sweater.

Your inspiration could be the pattern, the colors, the feeling it invokes in you...anything. Please leave a comment and share what inspires you. If you upload to SCS, the keyword for this challange would be JLOBC01 (JessicaLynnOriginal Bonus Challenge 1).

Heading for the Open Road

On DS 14th birthday (and that was last year), a friend brought over his Harley and gave DS a ride. DS was super excited. Jess (of Jessica Lynn Original) came out with this cool biker owl dude...Brentwood...on Thursday; DS had picked out some Harley papers & stickers one day at Micheal's...I knew I had all the ingredients for a perfect layout!

I used a favorite creative process (progressive page) to create Friday's page. For today's page, I wanted the DP to shine. I trimmed off half an inch on each side of the DP and mounted it to SU! textured black CS. I know...but at the time I laid out this page, I didn't have regular black. Oh DUH! I just had a light "bub" moment...my SU! order came on Friday, I could have changed out the paper BEFORE I put the page together on SATURDAY! (smacking forehead) LOL Oh well...too late to worry about THAT! I covered up all that texture; but ya know, the part that shows has this neat texture. LOL.

I really do like how I laid out the pictures. I took them from different angles and they are laid in a counter clockwise fashion. Here they are at the top, getting ready to take off. They go around me and turn towards the road...I have the pic of them in the yard. Then there they are on the road. They ride off...(they also ride off into the back of the page).

I love the titling. It's a combination of Tidy Alphabet and Harley Davidson sticker alpha letters. Tidy alphabet is stamped in SU! Basic Black craft ink on SU! Brushed Silver, and then embossed using SU! Black EP. They are attached with pop dots.

Here's Friday's page and today's page together.

Pretty cool, huh?

SUPPLIES:
Stamps - Biker Brentwood (JessicaLynnOriginal) digital stamp, SU! Tidy Alphabet
Paper - SU! Basic Black, SU! Brushed Silver, EK Success Harley Davidson, other 12 x 12 sheet - unknown
Ink - SU! Basic Black craft ink
Accessories - heat gun, pop dots, SU! Black embossing powder, corner rounder, sticky strip, EK Success Harley Davidson lettering & stickers, SU! Stampin Write Markers, SU! Stampin' Dimensionals

JLO presents....

Brentwood – The owl that time forgot
This month Brentwood has gone prehistoric.

When they were in 1st grade Brentwood and his friends took a trip to the museum to check out the Cro-Magnon Owl exhibit. They were showcasing some specimens dated approximately 40,000 to 10,000 years ago. Brentwood learned a lot about the dinosaurs that walked the earth. He wished that he and his friends could have been around during those times to make friends with those large creatures.

Join us tonight in the JLO chatroom at 7 PM Central / 8 PM Eastern for chat and prizes. Jessica will be giving away stamp sets and gift certificates to the JLO store.

Tonight, you will also meet Biker Brentwood...in digital and clear stamp form!

I saw Brentwood on a motorcycle...and knew I had the perfect pics to scrap!

A friend took DS on a Harley Ride for his 14th birthday! This is a progressive page. Stop by tomorrow for step by step directions on creating a progressive page. This is an easy, creative and very fun way to create distinctive layouts!

But first, tonight, stop by the chatroom to say HI to mollymoo951 - that's me! Come meet Jessica Lynn and the Design Team. Hope to see you tonight! No password required, just enter your user name & click connect!

Elementary School Graduation

In May of 2006, DS graduated from Elementary School. Here he is in his black suit and new tennis shoes. We made a special shopping trip to the mall to get him his first suit. The tie was one his principal gave him.

There were several sources of inspiration for this layout. The first was the National Scrapbooking Day Inspiration Extravaganza on SCS this past Friday & Saturday. Jennipher challenged us to scraplift from 1HapEMomE . I do not think I scraplifted anything, but I was inspired by all the distressing on her scrapbook pages.

This is new to me. I'd never thought I'd have so much fun tearing designer paper and wadding it up! That was fun! You ought to try it! Sketch was from 52 Sketches...52 Weeks ...check out Veronica Goh's page! I was shoved outside my comfort zone and am finding I like it here!

I added the Graduation Brentwood Owl from JessicaLynnOriginal. Here he is...peeking over the top of the distressed DP. He was colored with SU! Stampin Write Markers.

Here's a close up of the Flourishes. These are Tim Holtz's grungeboard pieces. I scattered some Primas and SU! Filligree Brads on the flourish.

Here's the right hand page of this two page spread. The big "sign" was actually the opening slide of the slide show they showed at the graduation. I printed that on HP inkjet printer paper.

Most all of the supplies were from my stash, which means I've had them a while. I did have to make a special trip to Michaels for the red primas. I didn't have ANY red primas! Other colors, but no red that was the shade I was looking for. The black paper on the left page is actually "pinstriped". The picture of DS is under a black frame. The "06" are stickers from Top Line Creations Outerwear Monograms Salt and Pepper. The big flourish is popped up on Stampin' Dimensionals; the other flourishes were run through Xyron. After crumpling my paper, I ran the brayer over it to smooth it out a bit. I only used one strip of sticky strip to attach to the distressed DP to the base.

This was definitely a stroll down the memory lane. DS graduates from Middle School on May 30. My baby is gonna be a High School Freshman next year! Wow.

SUPPLIES:
Paper: Michaels - Congrats was single sheet; other DP was from a Provo Craft stack; SU! Going GrayInk: SU! Basic Black Craft, HP inkjet printer paper
Stamps: JessicaLynnOriginal Graduation Brentwood Owl
Accessories: Tim Holtz grungeboard, Stampin Dimensionals, Xyron, Stampin' Write Markers, Primas, SU! Filligree Brads, Black Frame, sticky strip, tearing edge, brayer, TLC Outerwear Monograms Salt and Pepper

Derby Inspired Layout

The 135th Kentucky Derby...the Run for the Roses. There really is a blanket of roses they drape on the winning horse! I think the blanket of roses is so cool and amazing...all that beautiful handiwork and craftsmanship.

I love roses. During the summer, DH will go cut some roses and bring them in for me. He will stick them in empty Coca Cola cans, vases...or he'll just pop in the office and whip out a rose from behind his back. He's a keeper.

Last summer, I took some pictures of these roses. I used these pictures and created simple photo cards. I used rub-ons to say "Thinking of You"..."Thank You"....things like that. That's Mom's Mother's Day present. (wink)

I love these pictures...so I decided to enjoy them more by scrapping them!

So here's my Derby Inspired project...

I haven't decided on a title yet, but when I do...it's gotta fit in that blank So Saffron space. I love the effect of rub-ons on photos.

Here's close up of Brentwood...I used white gel pen to highlight the letters on his shirt. He is popped up on dimensionals.

I really do like this striped paper from a retired SU! Simply Scrappin' Kit named Friends and Flowers. I finally get to use some So Saffron Twill I purchased during SAB.

I added a hat pin from the SU! Pretties Kit to the knot in the ribbon. I love the hat pins...another Derby inspiration item.

This was the unexpected part of the layout...I was planning to use a rose I had die cut. I saw the negative sitting on my desk and it looked so striking against that striped paper. That is popped up with dimensionals.

There was definitely a crafsplosion during the creation of this layout!

Supply List
Paper: Chocolate Chip, So Saffron, PTI White, Designer Paper is from SU! Friends & Flowers Simply Scrappin’ Kit
Stamps: JLO Brentwood Digi Stamp
Accessories: Sticky Die Cuts from Friends & Flowers Simply Scrappin’ Kit, So Saffron Twill, Certainly Celery Twill, Staples, Sizzix, Sizzix Rose Die, SU! Scallop Border Punch, SU! Pretties Kit, Glue Dots, SU! Stampin Write Markers (Pumpkin Pie, Close to Cocoa, Creamy Caramel, So Saffron, Certainly Celery, Rose Red, Bordering Blue); Stampin’ Dimensionals, Paper Snips, Love & Happiness Rub-Ons, Basic Grey Rub-On tool, Sticky Strip

JLO Inspiration Challenge #1

As I mentioned yesterday, it's DERBY WEEKEND. Today is Oaks Day, tomorrow is Derby Day.

Do you want to learn more about the 135th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville? Check it out! There is also this neat quiz...where you can test your horse lingo. I scored 8/10.

So what's the KY Derby all about? Well...obviously, there's the horses. How about all the television stars, movie stars, country music stars, hats, flowers, fashion, royalty, food...I wouldn't knowWHERE to start with the food...Derby Pie, Mint Juleps, buffet...

I'm really likin' the big flowery hats. Yep...you read Mollymoo right...big flowery hats. Check 'em out! Aren't they fun?

Back to the horses, Jess has this cute pony in her store. Check out this guy...Future Rodeo Star...but he's still young...maybe he's to be a future winner of the Run for the Roses!

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to play along with the JLO DT and create something with JLO stamps inspired by the 135th Kentucky Derby. There's no time limit. If you don't have any JLO stamps, why not check out the FREE Brentwood digi stamp?

If you upload your project to SplitCoastStampers, use keywords JLOIC01 (JessicaLynnOriginal Inspiration Challenge 01). Additional keywords for this project could be Brentwood and/or JessicaLynnOriginal.

I'm looking forward to seeing your creations!

Open that starting gate and let those creative juices flow.

Run...baby...run!

JLO Design Team News

WOW! I wondered why I had more followers. So I check them out...leave some comments...hop over to JLO Design Team Blog...browse around there...check out the DT name list and HOLY COW! Jess picked to be the DT Lead for the next six months.

(thud)

Yep...fell out of my chair. I climbed back in...I just HAD to make sure I read that right. Yep. Off to check my work email. THERE IT IS! HOLY COW!

Now that the initial shock has subsided...I'm very flattered Jess likes my work. I've always been flattered Jess likes my work. Heck...she must know me better than me...she sent me that tree stamp...Relaxation Tree for All Seasons.

Who wud've thunk I would fall in love with a tree stamp, but as the name says...it truly is for all seasons! You can make it winter, spring, summer, fall. I even did winter with snow. Wanna go fishing with Riley this summer? I'm just amazed as how much I go to "that tree stamp".

Now...where was I...was dusting...no...went to check on DS who is digging a four foot trench with a backhoe...no...got a cup of coffee...no...I see this string on my finger...hmmmm....

I know! How about we celebrate with a BLOG HOP?! Featuring...BRENTWOOD!

Stay tuned...gotta iron out some details with Jess. In the meantime, check out the new FREE Brentwood digi stamp!

I best get back to my dusting. I have bedsheets to change, floors to sweep and laundry to do.

And..oh yeah...a Brentwood stamp to ink up.

Custom Name Stamp

I ordered a custom name stamp from JLO. I really do like the flourishy feel of the stamp. At the moment, I'm using it to stamp the back of my scrapbook layouts. I will most likely use it to stamp the back of my cards as well.

Check it out at Jessica Lynn Original. Turnover was quick; I received a proof the day I ordered. The stamp came in it's own storage bag complete with a clear block! Tell her Melissa sent ya!

Alaskan Cruise

...nope! I didn't get to go, but my BFF Karen did! She shared some awesome pics with me. I'd love to have some more pics...hint, hint. Anyway, these pics were PERFECT for the new JLO "Save the Ocean Set" . Jess send these a while back and I've had this SB page completed for a while. What didn't I post it sooner?

Well...I've been trying to figure out a better way to photograph my pages. AND since these aren't my kids in the photo...I needed a creative, yet unobstrusive way, to preserve their privacy. It took me a while, but I did finally figure something out. Right...right...I'm slow...but I'm also busy.

OK...on to the page.

I love this page! The colors are retired SU! In Colors Cool Caribbean and True Thyme. This is a progressive page. The 6 x 6 page has the True Thyme stitched ribbon. The 8.5 x 11 page is the Cool Caribbean. Of course, the 12 x 12 is the white.

I cut out the bottom portion of the 8.5 x 11 page and embellished my page with a scene created using stamps, a brayer and post-it notes.

My ides is not original. I gotta give credit to the Brayer Queen...the great Ms. Zindorf . I think my mountains came out great. They don't look like they need a BRA do they? I think I combined a couple of Michelle's tutorials...one for mountains and one for the black images. That's a lot of thinking. I should post after I create...the thinking would be less taxing. Good thing I wrote all this down and stuck a post it note on the back. (big grin) After consulting my list...I used the Lone Wolf Tutorial.

I'm still diggin' into the retired SU! In Colors...I brayered Marigold Morning for the sky, Cool Caribbean for the sea, True Thyme for the mountains, added Garden Green to the mountains and sponged Close to Cocoa at the top. I stamped images, colored them, sponged some on some Black ink for the ground and then outlined the images with White Gel Pen.

The tree is from JLO's Relaxation Tree for All Seasons. I colored everything with the BLACKEST thing I could find...which was...consulting list here...doesn't say. Most likely a Copic marker. The twigs are from SU!'s Roof Garden Accents & Elements.

Here's a couple of close up shots of the stamped image. Karen mentioned a few animals they saw in Alaska...I've forgotten...but I'm sure these three would be right at home. Maybe...in either case, they sure look cute on this page!

Thanks for stopping by. See ya next time!

Call Me!

I was inspired by the MFT Who's That Girl? Challenge (MFTWTG14) - Dec 15. The challenge was to create a card in blue, brown & white with "Call Me".

I don't have "Call Me". So I had to get creative.

This is how I get called. Twice a day. At feeding time. By my cows.

I used MFT's Punny Farm! I've also pulled out JessicaLynnOriginal's Relaxation Tree for All Seasons! I'm lovin' the fall look for this tree.

I'm really pleased with the richness of the ground and the sky. I sponged the ground with Kiwi Kiss, Close to Cocoa and Always Artichoke. I sponged the sky with Baja Breeze, Pacific Point and Basic Grey.

I'm going to use this in a progressive page. Featuring...what else, but my COWS!

Stamps: JLO Relaxation Tree for All Seasons, MFT's Punny Farm, Rubbernecker Barbed Wire Fence, Tidy Alphabet

JLO Sneak Peek #3

With Valentine's Day around the corner, I wanted to use the heart from the soon to be released Relaxation Tree for All Seasons.

I think this is cute, whimsical & fun. I especially LOVE the plaid Two Scoops paper with the Garden Green.

I stamped the tree in Chocolate Chip & colored with Copic Markers. Stamped the heart leaves with Real Red Craft Ink and colored with Copics. Most of the hearts are outlined using the Sakura Clear Glaze Pen (I love that pen!). Using the heart stamp from the Relaxation Tree set, I stamped hearts on Real Red CS using Archival Black and on Pretty in Pink CS using Real Red Craft. The pink hearts were colored in with Sakura Scouffle Pen. It's supposed to be puffy...I didn't get puffy. I don't think I like that pen. I attached those cut out hearts with pop dots.

The sky was sponged with Soft Sky; the grass with Mellow Moss. Drew in the grass sprigs by hand using a YG67. The pile of hearts is from Loads of Love - colored with various Copic Markers.

DP is Basic Grey Two Scoops (yummy paper). Card base is garden green. Card size is 6 x 6.

Stamps: JLO Relaxation Tree for All Seasons, Loads of Love
Paper: Garden Green, Basic Grey Two Scoops, Paper Trey White, Pretty in Pink, Real Red
Ink: Real Red Craft, Archival Jet Black, Chocolate Chip, Mellow Moss, Soft Sky
Accessories: Sponge, Copic Markers, Sakura Scouffle Pink, Sakura Glaze Pen Clear, Pop Dots
Techniques: Sponging

JLO Sneak Peek #2

Here is another sneek peek of the JLO Relaxation Tree for All Seasons. This stamp set plus nine others (ten total) will be released on February 1!

For this project, I used some items I received through the Wish RAK forum on SCS: the prima flowers & the designer paper. I also received the watercolor brush I used for the sky through Wish RAK.

I stamped the tree in Chocolate Chip, colored with Copics, removed some color with the colorless blender pen. Stamped the leaves, colored with Copics. I used my Sakura Glaze Pen in clear (love that thing!) on the leaves. New Spring leaves are shiny! I also used Copics and the glaze pen on the songbird.

The primas were attached with cyrstal effects. I attached clear Dew Drops in the flower centers with crystal effects as well. The flower petals are stiff.

Card base is Soft Sky, the bottom half covered with DP. The main panel is attahced to DP and Cameo Coral. That panel is mounted with pop dots.

The sky is painted with a watercolor pen and Soft Sky. I made my palette by squishing the lid into the pad & picking ink up from the lid.

Here's a close up of the details. You can see the glaze on the leaves - see how shiney they are.

Stamps: JLO Relaxation Tree for All Seasons
Paper: Soft Sky, Cameo Coral, DP
Ink: Soft Sky
Accessories: Clear Dew Drops, Sakura Glaze Pen Clear, Copic Markers, Pop Dots, Watercolor Brush, Crystal Effects
Techniques: Watercolor

JLO Sneak Peek #1

I love this scene. That's me...feeding the cows! The lady, the cows & the sentiment are from MFT's Punny Farm. The barbed wire fence is from Rubbernecker. The tree and the birds are from the soon to be released JessicaLynnOriginal Relaxation Tree for All Seasons. JLO will be releasing 10 sets on February 1!

I stamped the fence first. Masked the fence, then stamped the tree. All images are colored with copics. Check out the cool shading on the lady! I do believe I finally got it! YAY me! I stamped some leaf clusters on another page and cut those out and mounted them with pop dots. This is my "summer" tree. The MFT lady & cows were also stamped on another page and trimmed. I ran two cows through my Xyron. The third is mounted with pop dots. Here is a close up of those details.

The sky is sponged with Soft Sky. The grass with Garden Green & Mellow Moss. The card itself is 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 - folded one sheet of Chocolate Chip in half.

Stamps: MFT Punny Farm, JLO Relaxation Tree for All Seasons, Rubbernecker Barbed Wire Fence
Paper: Chocolate Chip, Night of Navy, Paper Trey White
Ink: Soft Sky, Garden Green, Mellow Moss
Accessories: Copic Markers, Sponge, Pop Dots, Eclipse Masking Tape
Techniques: Masking, Sponging
